The Democratic Party of Korea has reiterated its call for the Constitutional Court to promptly rule on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol, asserting that delaying the decision without a reason acceptable to the public threatens the constitutional order.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the party’s makeshift headquarters in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, Democratic Party Leader Lee Jae-myung stated, “Reports indicate that the Constitutional Court’s ruling might be postponed to April, which is beyond comprehension.” He continued, “Who can deny that a president, who should safeguard the constitutional order, has in fact destroyed it?”
Lee further argued, “It’s clear that the president threatened the people with the power entrusted to him and took unconstitutional actions by announcing martial law and deploying the military to the National Assembly without proper conditions. Everyone witnessed this; what more evidence is needed?”
He added, “If we grant a pardon to President Yoon, who is already arrested and charged with being the mastermind behind a rebellion, it would effectively provide a license for declaring martial law and conducting a military coup at any time. The Constitutional Court’s continued delay in resolving this chaos and confusion is, in itself, a threat to the constitutional order.”
