Eggs Thrown at Democratic Party Lawmakers in Front of Constitutional Court… Police: “Forming a Task Force for Strict Investigation”

During a press conference in front of the Constitutional Court, an incident occurred where an egg was thrown at a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, prompting the police to investigate.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced today (the 20th) in a press release that considering the seriousness of the matter, they have formed a dedicated investigation team led by the head of the criminal division of the Jongno Police Station to start the investigation.

Earlier this morning, Democratic Party lawmakers visited the Constitutional Court to hold a press conference urging the prompt dismissal of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Before the conference concluded, someone threw a raw egg at the Democratic Party members, hitting Representative Baek Hye-ryun on the face.

Representative Baek, who was hit by the egg, stated, “This is something that should never happen in a democratic society,” and requested the police to find the culprit, adding that she would personally take legal action.

The police have announced that they will conduct a swift and strict investigation by analyzing video footage and tracking the egg thrower.

They also warned protesters across from the Constitutional Court after the press conference, noting that those who threw eggs and bananas are engaging in actions beyond a one-person protest and proceeded with a forced dispersal.

The police broadcast a warning saying, “Anyone swearing at, hitting, or pinching a police officer will be immediately arrested on site as a flagrant offender for obstruction of justice.”

According to the current Assembly and Demonstration Act, gatherings within 100 meters of the Constitutional Court are prohibited, but press conferences and one-person protests are allowed.

Supporters of President Yoon have claimed they were holding one-person protests and have, in essence, continued their gatherings near the Constitutional Court.
