Lee Jae-myung: “’10-year Jeonse Guarantee’ is not the party’s official position… It’s not desirable”

Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, clarified that a proposed bill for a “10-year guarantee on lease contracts,” which he mentioned during a party’s people’s livelihood roundtable, is not confirmed for implementation. When the ruling party criticized the proposal, suggesting it could result in another “lease crisis,” Lee stated, “It is not something decided upon for promotion.”

On social media, Lee noted that “amending the leasing law to guarantee lease contracts for 10 years has not been discussed as an official party stance, and personally, I do not find it desirable,” emphasizing that “it is merely a topic of discussion concerning livelihoods, not a task set for actual implementation.”

He further added, “While ensuring the housing rights of citizens is an important duty of the state, achieving policy effects contrary to market principles is challenging,” and expressed the hope that there would be “no further unnecessary forced controversies.”

Previously, on the 12th, the Democratic Party’s people’s livelihood roundtable announced “20 livelihood agendas,” suggesting the extension of housing lease contracts to a maximum of 10 years. The People Power Party criticized this, claiming it attempts to repeat a larger version of the Moon Jae-in administration’s leasing law and “lease crisis” mistakes.
