Miryang City in Gyeongsangnam-do has been named the 2024 ‘Cultural City of the Year’ among the 24 cultural cities selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

On the 24th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced that Miryang City was chosen as the Cultural City of the Year in the ‘2024 Cultural City Performance Evaluation,’ recognizing its efforts in establishing a local community and cultural ecosystem, thus presenting a sustainable cultural city model.

Last year, under the vision of ‘Restoration of Life, New Future,’ Miryang City implemented various projects through the ‘Sunshine Cultural City’ initiative, resulting in an economic impact of 9.7 billion won. Notable achievements included the revitalization of the old downtown through the ‘Sunshine Culture Urban Art Platform’ and the citizen-participatory ‘Cultural City Governance.’ The former grounds of Miryang University were transformed into a cultural space, establishing the ‘Sunshine Culture Campus’ and developing it into a regional cultural hub, thereby constructing a continuous cultural city model. Additionally, programs such as the ‘Yeongnam-daero Project’ and ‘Cultural Plogging’ were operated to strengthen Miryang’s cultural identity and promote eco-friendly cultural activities.

Furthermore, spaces like ‘Sunshine Shop’ were utilized to support the creative activities of local artists and youth, while the ‘Green Culture Business’ initiative was launched to promote culture-based economic activities. This year, Miryang City plans to strengthen cultural city governance based on the achievements of the ‘Sunshine Cultural City’ project and focus on revitalizing the regional economy through cultural approaches.
