[Breaking News] Personal Information Commission: “Continued Concerns About DeepSeek Security… Caution Advised When Using”

‘DeepSeek Service’ Review and Safe Utilization Plan to be Suggested, ▲ DeepSeek, The Personal Information Protection Commission emphasized on the 7th, “Considering the ongoing security concerns during the use of DeepSeek’s service, we urge cautious use.”

The commission held a briefing at the Government Complex Seoul, stating, “We plan to propose ways to safely utilize personal information without concern through a prompt review of the service, leveraging various efforts.”

They further noted, “We are conducting a thorough comparative analysis of key documents such as DeepSeek’s privacy policy and terms of use,” adding, “We are technically analyzing the specific data and traffic transmitted during service use by setting up an actual usage environment, in collaboration with specialized institutions.”

Previously, on January 31, the Personal Information Commission sent an official inquiry to DeepSeek’s headquarters regarding their data collection and processing methods during the service’s development and provision processes, amidst controversy over excessive personal information collection by the Chinese generative AI, DeepSeek.

The major points of the inquiry include: the entity responsible for processing personal information, items collected, purpose, collection, use, and storage methods, and whether the information is shared.

The commission mentioned, “Typically, multiple rounds of inquiries and responses are conducted,” stating, “We posed key questions through multiple channels, including online and offline.”

They continued, “We have initiated discussions with international counterparts, including the UK’s ICO, France’s CNIL, and Ireland’s DPC, with whom we have established cooperation channels, and are currently sharing relevant information to discuss joint response measures.”

The commission also noted, “We are attempting to communicate through the Sino-Korean Personal Information Protection Cooperation Center located in Beijing, China,” adding, “We plan to request smooth cooperation through official diplomatic channels with China.”
