“Enjoyed a warm cup of tea…” Surprise microplastics found in tea bags [Health Talk]

[Financial News] A study has found that tea bags release a vast amount of microplastics. Microplastics may potentially cause inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and other health issues, warranting caution.

The New York Post reported on the microplastics found in tea bags on the 14th (local time).

A study from last year indicated that when brewing tea with tea bags made of plastic polypropylene, about 12 billion microplastic particles are released per milliliter.

Experts have determined that microplastics are potentially linked to inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

However, not all tea bags are problematic. Some are made from paper or plant materials, but it is challenging to determine what a particular tea bag is made from.

To avoid microplastics while drinking tea, experts recommend choosing loose leaf tea.

Although it may result in a loss of flavor, rinsing tea bags under running water can be somewhat effective in removing plastics.

Heating a mug or adding more hot water while a tea bag is still in it is risky, as it can release more microplastics.

On the 14th (local time), the South China Morning Post also covered microplastics in tea bags based on a joint study published in the international journal Chemosphere by research teams from Barcelona Autonomous University, Sohag University in Egypt, and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany.

The research team concluded that when drinking tea with tea bags, millions of microplastics in the tea bags can enter the human body and potentially harm health.

They particularly noted that intestinal cells absorb a large amount of microplastics, which could lead to inflammatory bowel disease if they enter the intestines.
