Koo Hye-sun admits to being jealous of her “ulzzang rival” Nam Sang-mi: “I was so envious… I was jealous but we became colleagues.”

[Sports Chosun, Reporter Jo Yoon-seon] Actress Goo Hye-sun revealed that she used to be jealous and envious of Nam Sang-mi in the past.

On the 12th, a video titled ‘Meeting of KAIST master’s student Goo Hye-sun and KAIST physics professor Jo Sung-jae’ was posted on the YouTube channel ‘Professor Jo Sung-jae’s Physics Holic.’

Regarding the opinion that constant comparison with others leads to unhappiness, Goo Hye-sun shared her thoughts: “I think that the psychology of yearning is what makes us feel this way. So it’s important to compare sufficiently to know exactly where I stand and strive to become the person I want to be.”

She added, “Instead of feeling inferior because I can’t do as well as someone else, I’ve realized it’s important to feel those emotions and aspire to be like them to actually become like them.”

Goo Hye-sun further shared her experiences from her school days, stating, “Friends who went to middle and high school with me might think, ‘How could Goo Hye-sun graduate at the top of her class from Sungkyunkwan University? That’s not possible. She wasn’t good at studying.’ I used to be compared a lot in acting, causing stress, but now I compare myself frequently. I am aware of falling behind, which is one reason I returned to school.”

She elaborated, “I wanted to graduate from university, and at graduation time, I wanted to be first in my class. The results of hard work are more evident in school than in society, so I wanted to achieve that.”

She also mentioned, “I have a lot of jealousy, but when I have a competitive rival, I collaborate and work on projects together. That way, someone I used to envy becomes my colleague.”

Recalling her feelings during her debut, Goo Hye-sun admitted, “Friends of the same age were so pretty, and I was envious. Nam Sang-mi, who is also from the ‘Ulzzang’ (best face) background, succeeded very quickly. She did well in dramas and acting and received good reviews, which made me envious.”

Furthermore, she expressed her desire to collaborate with Nam Sang-mi and ended up writing a screenplay for her, which later turned into a feature film casting Nam Sang-mi in the lead role.

Goo Hye-sun directed Nam Sang-mi in the 2012 film ‘Peach Tree.’ She explained, “Watching her act on screen was a learning experience for me. I saw her attitude and progress during the filming process, which made us complete partners. During the stage greeting, she tightly held my hand, and we became a perfect team.”

She concluded, “These are the good leadership traits I have. Despite having a lot of jealousy, I make sure to work with the people I feel envious of. During group projects, I pair up with the person I am most jealous of, learn from them, and share my knowledge as well.”
