A foldable iPhone might be on the way… WSJ: “Apple plans to launch in 2026”

A report from foreign media has emerged suggesting that Apple plans to release foldable iPhones and laptops around 2026.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 15th (local time), sources familiar with the new product plans stated, “Apple is planning to launch two folding (foldable) devices and an ultra-thin product with a reduced thickness compared to existing iPhones.”

The larger of the foldable devices is designed to be used as a laptop, and when the folded screen is unfolded, it expands to about 19 inches, similar to a desktop monitor, the sources explained.

The smaller device is expected to be a foldable iPhone, with a screen that unfolds larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the sources reported.

Additionally, the sources hinted, “The ultra-thin iPhone will be thinner than the existing products with a thickness of 8mm, and by simplifying the camera system, it will be more affordable than the Pro models.”

Scheduled for release in 2025, this model might serve as an alternative for consumers who desire a sleek design and can forgo some features offered by the Pro models.

The WSJ reported, “In the case of foldable products, Apple initially intended to release larger devices first to gauge market reaction, but it’s now more likely that the foldable iPhone will be released first.”

Regarding this, the sources said, “While Apple executives are pushing for a 2026 release, it might take an additional year to resolve technical issues.”

The WSJ assessed, “While Apple’s new product plan isn’t groundbreaking given that competitors are already creating foldable devices, it signifies a bigger change in form and function than what has been seen in recent years.”

It further commented, “In recent years, there have been relatively minor improvements in Apple’s major product lines, such as faster chips and better cameras, but these haven’t been sufficient to encourage users to upgrade devices at the previous pace,” adding that “Apple’s current attempt is a strategy to recover stagnant sales.”
