[Herald Economy = Reporter Shin Hyun-joo] On the 5th, Kweon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, commented on the Democratic Party’s move to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol, stating, “The impeachment of the president would repeat yet another historical tragedy.”
At the highest committee meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Kweon stated, “As the floor leader of the ruling party, I deeply apologize to the public for the great shock and concern caused over the past couple of days leading up to the president’s proclamation and repeal of martial law.” However, he also expressed a “devastated” feeling, noting, “The 23rd impeachment attempt by the opposition party during the Yoon administration became an impeachment against the president.”
Kweon emphasized, “After the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye, only a divided Korea into clear factions, political retaliation, and investigations into past wrongdoings remained. Those scars are deeply etched everywhere.”
Kweon continued his criticism of the Democratic Party, stating, “The Democratic Party intends to unilaterally handle the impeachments of the Auditor General and leadership of the Central Prosecutors’ Office during today’s plenary session without even the slightest effort to agree on the legislative schedule.” He remarked, “Throughout the 22nd National Assembly, the Democratic Party’s reckless actions have wrecked the Assembly.” He criticized, “The Democratic Party’s extensive impeachment spree, now targeting the constitutional head of state and the country’s president following government ministers, officials, and prosecutors, will foment national division and conflict, posing a threat to the separation of powers, which paralyzes the functioning of South Korea.”
Kweon stated, “The People Power Party will gather the consensus of 108 members of parliament to ensure the clear rejection of the president’s impeachment.”
