A mother in her 30s, who caused the death of a newborn with a disability in one arm, has been arrested.

A woman in her 30s, who killed her newborn child with disabilities, is seen leaving the Cheongju District Court after attending a pretrial detention hearing on the afternoon of the 25th. The mother, identified as Ms. A, was arrested on charges of murder. The warrant was issued by Judge Kim Seung-joo, who specializes in arrest warrants at Cheongju District Court, citing concerns that the suspect might flee.

Ms. A is accused of causing the death of her one-week-old daughter by smothering her face down on a bed at a postnatal care center in Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, on October 10. Initially, the police investigated Ms. A and her husband for involuntary manslaughter, but further suspicion arose due to the child’s arm disability. Subsequent forensic examination of the couple’s mobile phones revealed evidence suggesting they had planned the murder in advance, prompting the police to upgrade the charge to murder.

While the police sought arrest warrants for both parents, the prosecution rejected the warrant for the father, considering the family’s responsibility toward their other child. A police official stated that specific details could not be disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
