“Perjury Inducement” Verdict Approaching, Lee Jae-myung: “Won’t it follow the law and common sense?”

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed anticipation of a verdict based on the law and common sense regarding his upcoming first trial ruling on charges of instigating perjury. On the morning of the 25th, he attended a supreme council meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, ahead of his trial.

Upon leaving the main building of the National Assembly, journalists asked Lee about his feelings before the verdict. He responded, “I have nothing particular to say.” When asked about his outlook on the verdict, he replied, “Wouldn’t it follow the law and common sense?”

Lee declined to comment on whether he had discussed the first trial ruling on perjury instigation with supreme council members or whether he felt wronged concerning the prosecution’s charges.

Lee is set to receive the first trial verdict at 2 PM at the Seoul Central District Court. This follows a November 15th ruling where he received a one-year prison sentence with a two-year suspension for violating the Public Official Election Act, marking his second legal challenge related to judicial risks.

If Lee receives a confirmed sentence of imprisonment or higher, he will lose his position as a member of the National Assembly, and his eligibility to run for office will be revoked until the sentence is completed. According to the National Election Commission, if he receives a suspended prison sentence and it is confirmed, he would still lose his legislative seat, but he would only lose election eligibility during the suspension period.
