Cheon Young-mi’s “The Dignity of Joseon” won the Grand Prize in the Story category at the Korea Content Awards.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency have announced 15 winning works at the ‘2024 Korea Content Awards Story Division’. The event took place in the afternoon on the 21st at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul. Now in its 16th year, the Korea Content Awards Story Division aims to discover original stories that have the potential to be developed into various K-content, including comics/webtoons, performances, animations, dramas, and films.

This year, a record-breaking total of 2,500 works were submitted. After a three-stage evaluation by 170 judges, including the chief judge, writer Park Jae-beom, 15 winning works were selected. The Grand Prize (President’s Award) was given to ‘The Dignity of Joseon’ by writer Chun Young-mi, a work that reveals how King Sejong’s policy of establishing the four districts and six garrisons in the north originated from a humble meal prepared by the royal family member ‘Igyeo’, based on records from the 16th year of Sejong Annals. Judges praised it as “a work where historical imagination is harmoniously combined with a modern sense and completeness.”

The Excellence Awards (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award) were given to four works: ‘House of Ghosts’ by Kim Sun-hee, ‘The Tiger Crown Prince of Amsa’ by Kim Song-hee, ‘Terry K’ by Yeom Jeong-won, and ‘I Did Not Kill My Son’ by Jo Da-yeon. The Merit Awards (Korean Content Agency President’s Award) recognized 10 works, including ‘Royal Tomb’ by Kim Seong-hwa, ‘Monster’ by Kim Young-hee, ‘Martial Lady Jang Deok’ by Roh Ho-sung, ‘Dream Thief Crown Princess’ by Sung Eun-jin, ‘Villain’ by Eom Dae-geun, ‘Investigator Cha Yun-hee’ by Yoo Sung-hee, ‘Not the Prince’ by Jang Eun-kyung, ‘Rainy Secret Story’ by Jeon Ho-sung, ‘The Third Ghost of Mago’ by Jung Yeon-sik, and ‘Safe Divorce Research Institute’ by Joo Jae-sook.

Notably, these 15 winning works will engage in one-on-one consultations with domestic content companies at the ‘Content IP Market 2024’ to discuss business development strategies across various fields. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to provide follow-up support such as promotion and marketing to ensure these winning works can be commercialized into various genres of content. Yoon Yang-soo, Director of Content Policy Bureau at the Ministry, stated, “The continuous growth of the K-content industry comes from creative stories,” and pledged to support writers in freely expressing their imagination and bringing it to the world.
