“[Star News | Reporter Choi Hye-jin] In a recent interview with Star News at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, actress Kim Sung-ryung shared her experiences portraying the character Oh Geum-hee in JTBC’s weekend drama ‘Virtuous Sales,’ which concluded on the 17th. Kim revealed that she put a lot of effort into the slip scene in the drama.
Set in a rural village in 1992, a time when ‘sex’ was considered taboo, ‘Virtuous Sales’ follows the independence, growth, and friendship of the ‘Direct Sales Sisters,’ a group of four women who venture into selling adult products door-to-door.
The drama is set in the 1990s, and Kim Sung-ryung shared that she deliberated a lot about Oh Geum-hee’s fashion. She explained, ‘I searched for 90s fashion as a reference and looked up a lot of retro outfits. I found some that seemed to match with Geum-hee, bought them, and then passed them on to the wardrobe team to mix appropriately.’
Kim also expressed that her personal traits were evident in the character of Oh Geum-hee. She noted, ‘In acting, there’s no such thing as 100% portrayal. I think some of my traits are embedded in the Geum-hee you see now. Even if it isn’t through lines or acting, the aura of Geum-hee reflects something part of me.’
Furthermore, Kim explained Oh Geum-hee’s position among the ‘Direct Sales Sisters.’ She stated, ‘I was the eldest sister, but I wanted to play the role of a supportive yet back-stepping elder sister. I preferred a solid support role from the sidelines. I have developed a habit with age of not wanting to stand out. There’s this pressure of not wanting to be perceived as an old-fashioned person, so I become more cautious. I feel it’s appropriate to not linger too long in any position. It’s the adult thing to do, stepping back and being unassuming.'”
