“Imane Khalif, an Algerian boxer who won the gold medal in the women’s 66kg boxing category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was revealed to be biologically male according to a leaked medical report. Khalif was also a figure of controversy during the competition due to gender-related issues.
The Hindustan Times reported on the 5th (local time) that documents obtained by French journalist Jafar Ait Aoudia indicated Khalif has internal testes and XY chromosomes. The media outlet further detailed that Khalif has a deficiency of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, something only found in men.
This report was prepared in June last year by experts from Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris, France, and Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algeria. The report describes Khalif’s biological characteristics, including the presence of internal testes and the absence of a uterus.
However, this information is not new, as the media mentioned. Khalif’s possession of XY chromosomes had been previously revealed, which led the International Boxing Association (IBA) to prohibit her from participating in the World Championship in New Delhi in 2023.
Despite this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized Khalif as female, allowing her to participate in the women’s boxing event at the Paris Olympics. Amid the gender controversy, Khalif eventually won the gold medal.”
