Plans are underway to establish collaboration centers with 15 leading advanced biotechnology research institutions overseas.

The Ministry of Science and ICT, investment of 24.5 billion KRW in joint research center construction project over 3 years

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jo Seung-han = The government is establishing a cooperative platform with 15 major bio research institutions worldwide, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the USA.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 24th that it has selected 15 research projects for the “Advanced Bio Global Joint Research Center Construction Project.”

This project is aimed at supporting the establishment of a sustainable research and development (R&D) cooperation base with outstanding overseas research institutions in the advanced bio field, with a support plan of 24.5 billion KRW over three years.

In North America, collaborative research will be conducted with three institutions: LBNL, Stanford University in the USA, and the University of Ottawa in Canada, focusing on bio-foundry construction and the production of bio-manufacturing-based active pharmaceutical ingredients.

In the UK, collaboration in advanced new drugs and synthetic biology will be carried out with five institutions, including the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.

In Europe, centers will be established at four institutions, including the Technical University of Denmark, and two institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, including the University of Tokyo in Japan.

The overall support center for the execution of regional center research was selected to be the Daegu Gyeongbuk Advanced Medical Industry Promotion Foundation.

These institutions will carry out the development of core technologies in the advanced bio field with overseas research institutions, conduct exchanges of research personnel, and host networking programs.

Kwon Hyun-joon, the director of the Basic Source Research Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “Innovative research outcomes in the advanced bio field have mostly resulted from global joint research,” and added, “We will support the creation of world-class research outcomes through strategic R&D cooperation and continuous exchange with globally excellent research institutions.”
