Samsung emphasizes IoT-based connectivity
LG focuses on device performance and energy optimization
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics clashed over the innovation leadership of the ‘AI Home’ at ‘Korea Electronics Show (KES) 2024,’ the country’s largest electronics and information technology (IT) industry exhibition.
Samsung Electronics showcased the enhanced interconnectivity of all its product lines, including home appliances, TVs, and mobile devices, by integrating AI into its Internet of Things (IoT) platform, SmartThings. LG Electronics countered by presenting a home hub-based solution equipped with generative AI.
At KES 2024, which opened on the 22nd at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Samsung Electronics created an ‘AI Village’ booth with the concept of ‘AI Life in Daily Lives.’ The exhibition, running for four days until the 25th, aims to focus on showcasing ‘AI Home’ technology that provides AI experiences optimized for family members in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms.
In particular, the ‘Calm Onboarding’ feature applied to the living room space within the booth caught the attention of visitors. When a newly purchased product is powered on, it automatically connects to SmartThings. The ‘3D Map View’ feature, allowing users to check and control home devices in real-time via the ‘Neo QLED 8K’ TV, also stood out. The kitchen space allows for managing schedules by monitoring daily routines. By registering medication schedules in SmartThings, users receive alerts at set times, and the ‘Bespoke Water Purifier’ can be set to provide water at the appropriate amount and temperature. In the bedroom space, health management solutions tailored to individuals are offered based on health data from wearable devices, focusing on sleep and exercise.
LG Electronics built the entire front space of its exhibition on ‘AI CoreTech,’ the foundation of its AI Home. AI CoreTech optimizes performance and energy efficiency by applying AI technology to key components like motors and compressors. The booth was designed with a theater concept to introduce the unique technology of the upcoming AI Home Hub ‘LG ThinQ On’ through a theatrical format.
On stage, a couple interacted with ‘ThinQ On’ to receive recommendations for food and wine suitable for an anniversary registered in the calendar. They checked the cooking process in the oven via voice commands and changed lighting modes to create an atmosphere fitting for the occasion. The feature that allows setting operation routines for air conditioners and robot vacuums via the ‘LG ThinQ’ app before returning home also garnered attention.
