According to Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, on the 26th, A, the former head of a housing redevelopment association in Gyeongnam, was arrested on charges of receiving bribes in violation of the Specific Crimes Act for arranging for construction companies to be selected in redevelopment projects and delivering bribes to A. In addition, two other brokers involved in arranging were investigated without detention on charges of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act for providing money to A, and the construction company representative was also investigated without detention on charges of providing bribes. According to the police, A demanded a specific company to be contracted with a construction company by using his position as the head of the association, and in return, 50 million won, while the brokers, including B, received a total of 400 million won from three companies in exchange for arranging the selection of construction companies for A. The police received intelligence that brokers were receiving money from companies at construction sites of housing redevelopment projects and intervening in the selection of construction companies and initiated an investigation, securing evidence through analysis of financial transaction records and search and seizure. A Gyeongnam police official stated, “We plan to concentrate our investigative efforts to eradicate corruption in the construction site and bribery acts related to redevelopment projects that may lead to additional burdens on association members.”
